I’m going streaking…

Well, that either scared you away… or got your attention!

The official definition of a running streak, as adopted by the Streak Runners International, Inc. and United States Running Streak Association, Inc., is to run at least one continuous mile (1.61 kilometers) within each calendar day under one’s own body power (without the utilization of any type of health or mechanical aid other than prosthetic devices).

Who knew (… well I guess both the Streak Runners International, Inc. and United States Running Streak Association, Inc.)??  And there’s me thinking any old bimble round the block would do!

SO, I’m all about the easy and what better way to start a running streak than on the 1st day of the year.  I don’t even have to think about how runs I’ve clocked up… at least until the 1st of February, then I have to math… hate math!

I will point out now that this is most definitely NOT a New Years Resolution!  I have a marathon to train for and I need to light a fire under my ass to get match fit.  I’ve already had one failed attempt, I do not plan on having the bitter aftertaste of another.  It’s taken too long to rinse that particular unpleasantness out of my mouth.

Now, out side of Janathon and Juneathon (annual festivals of activity and excuses), I’ve not really made a conscious effort to accumulate a continuous run (no pun intended) of running… God, that’s a terrible sentence, but you know what I mean.  Truth be told, despite Janathon starting out life as “run every day” challenge (I think), they have both evolved to include any fitness related activity, so even then, I may have managed 31/30 days of activity but definitely not consistently running.

I haven’t a target/timeframe in mind, figured I’d just get started and work on the particulars later.  At the moment the idea of running 365 days on the trot (there’s that Go Big or Go Home mentality that gets me into so much trouble…) seems quite daunting BUT, if I play by the rules, then I need only run 1 mile to keep the streak alive and that’s not so bad.  Now given that I’m only 10 days in, I don’t think I need to worry about too much about the pros and cons of streaking (e.g. metabolism working better / no recovery days*) but a man can’t live off tart running alone.  I am going to have to start thinking of working in some additional strength and conditioning work…. {theatrical sigh}.

*- these are findings of other people based on a mega quick t’internet search… I couldn’t tell you if my metabolism is even working now let alone if will work better!
